“I am a cop, and I swear to God, tomorrow I am getting away from here, and I will get you out, even if I have to break you out.” I whisper it against his ear as he cries. I am talking so low, I don’t know if he can even hear me. But I damn sure don’t want anyone else to hear me. My life depends on it, and now, so does Tony’s. “I broke into this fucking situation, and I swear to God, I can break you out.” I continue to whisper in his ear, and he finally settles down.

“How do you know I don’t belong here,” he whispers back. “You’ve watched me kill three men with your own eyes.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. It was self-defense,” I say, as low as I possibly can. “I am serious, Antony. I’m getting you out of here.”

“There was a village, in the sand pit. We were ordered to go in and watch the civilians, me and seven other SEALs, before the Army arrived to dig their wells, or build their bridges, or whatever shit they do. Humanitarian shit, I don’t know. The civilians were armed, and before we knew it, it was a battle. Everyone was killed, except us SEALs. The President had us tried, and we were convicted.”

I kiss him. I kiss him even though he doesn’t want to be kissed. I kiss him, even though he pulls away. I kiss him, until he kisses me back. I lead him over to the mattress, and I open my bottle of water. I have several drinks, then I give it to him. He takes a few drinks, and hands it back. We’re bonding, over war stories and bottled water.

I smile at him, climb into his big lap, and begin whispering again. “My little sister Addison was killed in jail last month. I came here to find out who did it, not to fall for a war hero.” He pulls away, and shakes his head. I smile at him, and kiss him. “Thank you for coming back alive,” I continue. He doesn’t want to hear it. “And for keeping your men alive. You deserve a medal.”

“Stop fucking with me,” he growls. His black eyes flash, as he gazes at me, then he kisses me. I sigh against his mouth. “I think Lucius killed your sister.” It’s my turn to pull away. My eyes grow wide. “I killed him that first week.” He whispers it against my mouth, before he kisses me again.

“So, I just have to figure out a way to prosecute every fucking person in this prison system, and it’s outside of my jurisdiction.” I kiss him, then I really look at him. He looks so tired. I want to bring him home, and force him to sleep for a week. “And the only fed I know broke up with me because I’m not a good Christian girl.”

“Don’t go to him, find someone else,” he tries to keep his voice low, but it doesn’t work.
